In front of over a thousand spectators and under perfect skies the Wildcats in their various forms were just too strong for their opponents, despite being pushed very hard for their wins. This was the first time they picked up the Social flag, the fifth consecutive Premiership crown and incredibly the eigth consecutive Conference title. No doubt celebrations will continue for many days to come! Run by Aussie Rules UK, Touch has been a big success in its four years in London. Played as a mixed competition, it allows those who are told old, slow or soft for full-contact Aussie Rules the opportunity to continue to play the world’s greatest game. And it has allowed other nationalities living and working in the capital to experience Aussie Rules too. In addition to Aussie expats, players this year have come from the USA, Canada, France, South Africa, New Zealand and Poland. Played at the Novocastrians Rugby Club in Newcastle, the Centurions proved too strong for the Hawks, running out winners 11.15 (81) to 4.13 (37). Newcastle were rocked early by injury to key on-baller and captain Matt Bradford, but steadied the ship with 3 goals apiece from Rich Mitchell and Ben Merrett. A further two goals were added by best on ground Michael Shackleton, whose telling influence around the ground was crucial in deciding the outcome. Middlesbrough battled hard but were unable to overcome the loss of star player and talisman Ben Hansen. Nevertheless the game was played in great spirit and a big thank you to Scott Hind from the Hartlepool Dockers for umpiring the match.
