britcup5.jpgThe 2008 Brit Cup was a historic day for Australian football in the UK. Eight teams competed, with only half coming from the traditional powerbase of London.

The 8 teams were:

  • West London Wildcats
  • Wandsworth Demons
  • London Swans
  • Putney Magpies
  • Reading Kangaroos
  • Wales Red Devils
  • ARUK Southern Redbacks
  • Nottingham Scorpions

Played at the Wimbledon Hawks home ground, the Brit Cup was played under sunny skies and featured some outstanding footy.

The West London Wildcats won yet another trophy, but the real talking point was the performance of the ARUK Southern Redbacks, made up of players from the 9-a-side format. After a close 5 point loss to the Wildcats in their first match, the Redbacks lifted with strong wins against Wandsworth, the Swans and Putney to make the final.

Led by best on ground Donny Mullen, the Wildcats were too strong in the final, with 16 year old George Merrick doing a superb job in the ruck. Merrick is part of the junior Great Britain Bulldogs squad that will play 3 matches in Australia during the AFL International Cup. Joining big George in the final were Ollie Ash (also a junior Bulldog) and Paul Avery (coach of the junior Bulldogs).

Thanks to all players, teams, umpires and organisers for making the day such a huge success.
