Should you hear people talk about mark of the year, chances are that the mark in question was an overhead one. Leaping above your opponents - maybe even with a little help from their back - and taking a mark is one of the best feelings in the game, and should you take one of these in a match you can rightfully boast for years to come. Of course the same skills are needed even if you are not contesting for the ball, and being able to take a mark high is a key skill. To take an overhead mark you should be keeping your eyes on the ball at all times. Move towards it as it drops towards you and take off with one knee raised for protection and a little more spring. Stretch your arms high and splay fingers wide, aiming to cushion the ball and keep a firm hold of it as you land.
