Under 16 Grand Final this Sunday PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 1

Another historic day with the first ever Under 16 Grand Final taking place this weekend at Clapham Common.

The Carshalton Hawks will take on the Featherstone Wildcats at 2.15pm on Sunday 20th July.

Both teams have recorded wins over each other during the regular season so it promises to be a cracking affair. The boys have taken to the game like ducks to water and have relished the physical contact.

Leading the way for the Wildcats will be Felipe ‘Big Unit’ Ferreira and Rajjan Sund, who have both been named in the junior Bulldogs side that will travel to Australia in August. The Wildcats have enjoyed tremendous success at senior level in recent times, so will be hoping to add even more silverware to their growing collection.

The Hawks have other ideas and will look to giant ruckman George Merrick, a member of the England Rugby schoolboys team and who also played a key role in the senior Wildcat’s win in the Brit Cup. Martyn Smith, recently signed by Harlequins Rugby League, will look to go around or through his opponents, and is fired up for a big game.

If you are not doing anything on Sunday get down to the Common for a feast of footy. There will be four matches in total, with the Wandsworth Demons hosting the North London Lions in all 3 grades. Match times are 10.45am, 12.15pm, 2.15pm and 3.45pm. A big thank you to both the Demons and the Lions for agreeing to include the grand final as an exciting part of an already big day.

It is also Ladies Day that day, so if the weather gods are kind you really have no excuses J. See you there!

London Results - Round 7 PDF Print E-mail

london_3.jpgWell, for those of you who haven't had a look yet, the scores for Round 7 of the London Premiership make for amazing reading.  To start with West London obviously paid attention to history.  The Swans gave them a massive challenge just a few weeks ago, pushing them to within a few goals of losing - no such fears this time around though, as they didn't allow the Swans to score a single goal.  Or behind.  25.12 (162) to 0.0 (0) is the worst result for the Swans in recent memory, and they will have to work hard to turn their season around now.

The news doesn't stop there however, as in an incredible turn of events North London Lions beat the recent form team Putney 8.6 (54) to 6.16 (52).  Having come off the back of some incredible performances the Magpies will be wondering where their goalkicking boots went, and are now tied for second place with North London and Wandsworth who rounded off the results with a 7.7 (49) 13.13 (91) victory over Wimbledon.  Unless a miracle happens, it looks like the final four are now set in stone.

bulldogs_bigbensmall.jpgThe National Training Camp for the Junior Great Britain Bulldogs was held on Saturday 14th June at Clapham Common.  Boys from all over the UK travelled to London to compete for the 22 places on offer for the Bulldog’s trip to Australia in late August.

Each player was put through a series of physical tests including the dreaded beep test, 20m sprint, 6 x 20m repeat sprints and push-ups. Competition to outdo each other was fierce, with the winners of each category being:

  • Beep test                                 Reece Jackson (Level 12.4)
  • 20m sprint                               Martyn Smith (3.15 seconds)
  • 6 x 20m repeat sprints              Martyn Smith (23.69 seconds)
  • Push-ups                                 Stuart Smith (65)

The boys were also put through an intense skill session, with particular focus on their ability in the areas of kicking, handballing, marking and bouncing.

London results - Round 6 PDF Print E-mail

putney_magpies.gifPutney Magpies continued their fine form with wins in both the Premiership and the Conference over the London Swans on Saturday.  Despite a good effort on the Swans part the Conference side went down 2.8 (20) to a Putney score of 21.18 (144).

The Swans Premiership side fared little better against a Magpies team buoyed by their recent victory over the Wildcats, and although the scoreline of 18.19 (127) against 3.3 (21) didn't accurately reflect a solid Swans performance, especially in the second half, Putney were far and away the better side and worthy winners on the day.  Only time will tell however as to whether they will be able to maintain this form throughout the rest of the regular seasona and into the finals.

This Magpies win keeps them up with the Wildcats, who enjoyed a 21 point victory over arch rivals Wandsworth, kicking 11.11 (77) against the Dees 8.8 (56) to give the Wildcats bragging rights in this fierce rivalry.
