BARFL welcomes the North Fremantle AFC ‘Magpies’ !

Whilst the BARFL has recently completed is 14th full season, with more teams competing annually than ever in the modern era, it is rare that we get a visit from a well established club from the game’s home country, and an opportunity to show the quality of the game being played on distant shores!

The 2004 season saw Finals being played in  two London leagues (Premiership and Conference),  Southern and Northern Regional Leagues and a Scottish League (SARFL). In addition the mid-season ‘Brit Cup’ saw a lightening carnival of more than 120 home-grown (British/EU) players representing their clubs and hoping to impress selectors for the British National Team for the International Cup in Melbourne 2005.

It’s been more than 2 years since the last BARFL ‘Barbarians’ representative team ran out, and so interest has been high for an opportunity to play alongside normally opposing BARFL players. The Barbarians team has been selected from representatives from almost every club in the London/Southern area and my thanks to them for pulling on the shirt today, in what I’m sure will be a hard-fought, quality game of football.

We sincerely hope the visiting Magpies enjoy the game and also their visit to London, and that on their return home they will spread the BARFL word. New players are always welcome at all clubs and the BARFL is also always looking for  umpires and people who need help in starting a new footie club wherever they live in the UK. News and information is always available at www.barfl.co.uk and we look forward to the new season in April 2005.

I would like the thank Magpies and in particular Baden Pratt for giving us the opportunity to host the match and finally, many thanks to Matthew Glynn for his invaluable help in making this game happen.
